Traditions and local customs of the Erzgebirge
There are several carving and lace making clubs in Jöhstadt and its neighbourhood.
Some clubs regularly meet for joint work. So you can get a very good insight in this craft tradition of the Erzgebirge during a visit. If there is a certain number of people who are interested, we can even organise a lace making show and live carving in our hostel. Not far from Jöhstadt, in Neudorf, you can learn something about the production of the for the Erzgebirge (Ore Mountains) typical incense cones (Räucherkerzchen) , and you can even produce some unique copies on your own.
For those who are interested in the historical mining in the Erzgebirge (Ore Mountains), a visit and a pulling into the gallery "Andreas-Gegentrum-Stolln" are recommendable. The museum train stops directly in front of the old mining plant. The pulling in is only possible with a trained person. That is why you better booked a tour in advance. We are also happy to do this for you. Moreover, the gallery "Markus-Röhling-Stolln" in Frohnau, the visitors' mine "Im Gößner" in the Erzgebirgsmuseum Annaberg or the visitors' mine "Zinngrube Ehrenfriedersdorf" are worth a visit. A special highlight is the annual presentation of "the last shift on Christmas Eve in a mine" in the gallery "Andreas-Gegentrum-Stolln". It always takes place on the Saturday before the 2nd Advent. The museum train is always prepared for this event. Every year, the mining club "Bergbrüder of Jöhstadt" performs the traditional quarter after Pentecost (Pfingstquartal) with a change of the leader (Ladenvater) and a big parade.
Visitors who are good walkers, have the possibility to collect special stones in the close and further surroundings of the hostel. We can give you further hints.
A unique experience for our guests is a ride with the narrow-gauge railway "Preßnitztalbahn" between Jöhstadt and Steinbach, which is an adventure in every season. The museum train regularly drives among others with the legendary IV-K steam engines through the valleys Schwarzwasser and Preßnitztal, and it offers many interesting stops on its track. Interested visitors can get more information on the homepage of the "Preßnitztalbahn" .
